Shadow of a Ghost:

Windy Voice

bayou soul, flaming tressed
one and only chantilly laced
waiting at the altar of song

The music is a swelling sea
the levee’s gonna break some day
There’s a lot of turbulence I hear

in the windy voice, a fading choice
when I can I meet her there
and jump into the swirling water

deep inside this holy mess
a noble cause a fool’s quest
there’s bound to be a place for you I know

so come on now, take a leap
the current pulls you in with me
I’m nothin’ but a song for you to play

in the windy voice, a fading choice
when I can I meet her there
and jump into the swirling water

at the altar not too long
she feels the swell she doesn’t run
and somewhere in the chorus it all crashes down

lightning cracks it splits the sky
the birds of praise and angels cry
like words they come and then they fly away

in the windy voice, a fading choice
when I can I meet her there
and jump into the swirling water

The Delta Bar

hey Albert, I was looking back through a crack in time today
at the weak old men with the big disease and I couldn’t turn away
they gave us dimes and we played all night, the better to enable
and I saw your face in the neon light over the bumper pool table

down at the Delta Bar
down at the Delta Bar

7-up with a cherry on the rocks and chips could keep us smiling
and the same old lady at the payphone forgot the number she was dialing
they sent us to the cigarette machine and said to make it snappy
in the smoky room, the whiskey and the beer I guess we all looked happy

down at the Delta Bar
down at the Delta Bar

we used to run like skin and bones in the bosque by the river
so glad to be among the trees in the early morning shiver
it was our world outside of time where the good guys got away
but that kind of freedom never lasts, nothing can make it stay

down by the Delta Bar
down by the Delta Bar

but the world did shift and time ran away, I couldn’t stand my ground
I cut you off with no return though we saw each other around
the weak old man had arrived when the cool guys said I had to
the lines were drawn, that’s how it was, but I’m sorry that I left you

down by the Delta Bar
down by the Delta Bar

well I suppose you probably knew courage was not my forte
and the cracks in time of this broken life sometimes just get in the way
but hey Albert, I was looking back through one of them today
at the weak old man with a big disease and I had to run away

down to the Delta Bar
down to the Delta Bar

Ain’t Got No Blues

a slave on a ghost ship, living on fumes
you thought you’d set sail but I heard different views
mother mercy of the tides and her ghost ship crew
said you were a stowaway, a fade away with no clue

who ain’t got, who ain’t got no blues

but you’re still very popular no one seems to care
maybe they’re just entranced by your ghost ship stare
well anything is possible and there’s so much to lose
when you’re an entertainer on a ghost ship cruise

who ain’t got, who ain’t got no blues
who ain’t got, who ain’t got no blues

out there in the audience they all catch your drift
they’re swimming through the bubbles, they’re bringing you a gift
for your amusement maybe you can use
this ghost ship cannon with a ghost-lit fuse

‘cause you ain’t got, you ain’t got no blues
you ain’t got, you ain’t got no blues

now I hear the sirens singing but it’s a little bit late
it was a long time ago that this ship met it’s fate
wandering aimlessly for a century or two
and because of the gold and fame no one ever knew

who ain’t got, who ain’t got no blues
who ain’t got, who ain’t got no blues

Queen of Light

I saw a guardian of darkness sing a song of fire
I heard it echo through the canyon like a wounded choir
I saw it flicker on the face of a queen of light
she who sat near by me one smoky night

I was a ghost who had just happened upon the scene
and thus privileged was I in a place I’d never been
there were others there also but I don’t think they saw
this ghost who was lost in a song so raw

well about then a captain’s daughter walking under the moon
was flaunting her needle and her silver spoon
she’d been searching so long for the underground
so the queen of light let her hear that guardian’s song

far away, a fire burns above
the flames grow and take everything you love
as they rise in the orange sky
and the wind cries for your tired eyes
a queen of light waits for you
a queen of light, she waits for you

he sang that song of fire from his weary heart
she was touched by the heat she was spinning apart
she danced into the night she wailed and she moaned
and then she through down her money and everything that she owned

and as the night was winding down, her dance slowing to a halt
she didn’t seem so desperate then, it was nobody’s fault
they gathered for the sunrise and a final feast
and then that captain’s daughter vanished into the east

well you know that a ghost can only take it all in
and even if I could where would I begin
to tell you about one smokey night
with a guardian of darkness and a queen of light

far away, a fire burns above
the flames grow and take everything you love
as they rise in the orange sky
and the wind cries for your tired eyes
a queen of light waits for you
a queen of light, she waits for you

Wouldn’t You Agree

here comes your long lost sister
she’s got her own mind
seems like she carries a heavy load
from deep down inside
she’s got a way of acting
you can’t really describe
when you thought she’d gone away
she’d just found a place to hide

wouldn’t you agree, Carmenita, wouldn’t you agree
the sun is going down in the west, there’s nowhere to flee

she walks up and unpacks her case
spreads it all around
you gaze upon such finery
and hardly make a sound
you pick and choose from the array
according to your style
the most tempting of beautiful things
you hadn’t seen in awhile

wouldn’t you agree, wouldn’t you agree
the sun is setting in the west, it’s getting hard to see
wouldn’t you agree, Carmenita, wouldn’t you agree

the day will come, she’ll go for good
you’ll never see again
those prodigal days slip away
all things must come to an end
that part of you so hard to face
someday you will know
she gave you fire when she took your blood
and now it’s you that has to go

wouldn’t you agree, Carmenita, wouldn’t you agree
the sun is sinking in the west, there’s nowhere to flee
wouldn’t you agree, wouldn’t you agree

Vienna Vampire Waltz ©2015 Joe City Garcia

there was a time in Vienna
when the rain came after the heat
the horses clicked by that old embassy
and the cobblestones gleamed down the street

embrace me baby, she whispered
her fingers like notes on a harp
give yourself up to the unholy ghost
and feel how time tends to warp

decadence in good measure is lovely
even a vampire knows when to quit
it’s the passion and the grit, the art of the dance
allow a lover like me to split

there was a time in Vienna
when the rain came after the heat
the horses clicked by that old embassy
and the cobblestones gleamed down the street

I sat alone at the Hagendorf Café
it happened and I tell you it’s true
just up the road from that grand hotel
I know it doesn’t matter to you

but I miss the kiss of her cooling rain
the sound of her steps next to mine
her hand how it trembled as she plucked the strings
before vanishing into the night

Go Away

these stars in the pitch black above
on Vin Rose Avenue
the night that you came back
no one waited up for you
quiet as mice no one here seems to stir
they hope you pass by and pray

go away

and this old house would rather keep
it’s doors tightly closed
and douse all the candles please
but kindly leave a rose
down by the mailbox lies your crown of thorns
save it for some other day

go away

walking down this crooked path
with your regal hitch
by all those kings of false freedom
lying in the ditch
but these old stars have no fear of you
they’ll even light up your way

go away

maybe some other time and place
I can walk with you
but tonight under these stars
on Vin Rose Avenue
please walk on to the other side of town
I think that I’d better stay

go away
go away
not today
go away

World on the Edge

you can’t beat the view from here why would you even try
the cold wind whips across your face and the tears form in your eye
that thought was rising in my head as you gazed at the land and sky
how could there be any better place a better place for you and I

well, hell is freezing over here on earth we’re heating up
nuclear destruction is no match for this world cup
and baby London is still calling and it doesn’t cost a single dime
to see that Rome’s still falling and we spin back in time

I heard about the state of insecurity
the regressive forces in society
yeah, honey, this is our time on the ledge
oh baby, this is our world on the edge

eve of destruction she took a break but now it’s all used up
behind the scenes she’s creeping along she can never destroy enough
politics, religion and the holy grail you got ‘em all at once
the songs and stories and poems of revolution buried in the dust

I heard about the state of insecurity
the regressive forces in society
yeah, honey, this is our time on the ledge
oh baby, this is our world on the edge

you can’t beat the view from here why would you even try
how could there be any better place - a better place for you and I

our world on the edge
our world on the edge
a better place for you and I
our world on the edge

Shadow of a Ghost

where did you go, who can explain
you were a child with no name
and just begun, your heart beat strong
in the coming light of a fading sun

I am wanting what I’m missing
and I’m knowing what I keep forgetting
like I’m falling when I’m climbing
I keep losing what I’m finding

was there anything there at all
the echo in the wind of some unwritten song
was there anything here at all
a shadow in the night of a ghost on a wall

some things take time and this will take awhile
there just ain't no way to escape this trial
we’ve gotta across this great divide
maybe there’s a brighter day on the other side

I am wanting what I’m missing
and I’m knowing what I keep forgetting
like I’m falling when I’m climbing
I keep losing what I’m finding

was there anything here at all
the echo in the wind of some unwritten song
was there anything there at all
a shadow in the night of a ghost on a wall

was there anything here at all

Flagman

broken roots and dried up branches
along the road they all bleed for you
heartaches spill from veins of sorrow
dark red, burned yellow, true blue

the flagman knows this way is hard
his lamp burns caution in the night
a road unraveled he has guarded
when you got nothing left to fight

follow the flagman
follow the flagman
follow the flagman
come on he waits for you
come on now he waves you through

the flagman stands out on the highway
the night wind blows his lonesome tune
at his post all through the hours
and when the morning comes he'll follow you

follow the flagman
follow the flagman
follow the flagman
come on he waits for you
come on now he waves you through

follow the flagman
come on, come on he waits for you
follow the flagman
and when the morning comes he’ll follow you
when the morning comes he’ll follow you
